Professional Psychological Astrologer Margaret Gray (MSW  D. Psych. Astrology) with consulting practice in Ireland, Hawaii and California explains what Psychological Astrology is and what it can tell you about yourself.

Psychological Astrology – An ancient tool to help you on your journey in life

What is Psychological Astrology?

Your birth chart, which is based on your date, time and place of birth, is a moment in time, which like a snapshot captures the start of your individual journey in this life. Symbolically it is a map of your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual potential. It does not describe how you will manifest your potential throughout your life. This is dependent on your choices, as well as the circumstances that affect you. You may at times forget, repress or disown parts of yourself on your journey. As a psychological astrologer, my role includes reminding you, through the map of your birth chart, of the essence of who you are and what your individual journey on this planet is about.

What does a consultation entail?

The construction of the birth chart is a mathematical formula which computer software easily produces. The next step is noting how the movements of the planets in the sky right now are affecting your chart. As they land on different parts of your chart they act as a wake up call to those particular areas of your life such as your vocation and career, your relationship life, your family, your home, learning and travel etc. If you have asked me to focus on a particular area of your life I will do so, whilst also reviewing the rest of your chart and the transits you are currently undergoing.

Who comes to you for a consultation?

Everyone is always welcome. No knowledge of astrology is necessary. My youngest clients are newborn infants and my oldest client so far is my dear friend Lea in Hawaii who is 94. I learn from all my clients.

As well as working with individuals, couples and children/young people, I also supervise astrology students and new astrologers. In addition I work as a consultant with analysts, psychotherapists, psychologists and counselors offering psychological astrology as an additional tool in their work with clients. I am hoping to also develop my work with teachers, as astrology is a particularly useful tool in understanding and supporting young people.

What specific areas of life do clients ask you to focus in on?

As humans our main concerns in life are finding a sense of meaning and vocation, relating to those we love, dealing with family dynamics and earning a living. One of the great gifts in this time of immense collective change is the freedom to pursue one’s true vocation rather than merely a job. With the security of pensions or savings in the bank no longer guaranteed, many are discovering that following their heart and passion is a real possibility and to their delight are finding that they can earn a good living from it. The natal chart offers clear insight to individual Vocation and life path.

I also work with a lot of individuals and couples who have questions about their relationship needs and their current and past relationships. As humans, relationships can bring us the great joy as well as a degree of frustration and pain. However, it is where we learn many of our deepest lessons in life through holding a mirror to our best and most challenging sides. Psychological Astrology can be very helpful in reminding us of our individual needs in relationship and how they are similar and different to those of our loved one. With understanding, compassion, respect and real choice can replace judgment and fruitless efforts to change the other person. For example, understanding your Moon sign in your birth chart informs you of your comfort needs. Knowing more about the position and sign of your Venus informs you of what you value and find beautiful and Mars describes what you desire. Mercury outlines how you communicate. The greater your understanding of your own needs, the more empowered you are to make clearer choices in your relationships.

How can astrology help teenagers/young people

The birth chart offers a map of a young person’s potential. Understanding more about their creativity, resources, skills, talents, and internal conflicts enables a young person to make clearer choices in their life as well as strengthening their self-esteem. Teenagers can find it particularly helpful to understand more about the planetary transits they are going through at this very important stage of their life.

What do you do in your consultation work with therapists/counselors/analysts?

I look at the charts of therapy clients, (with the clients permission). My psychological analysis of the client’s birth chart adds additional insight and can assist the therapist to move past blockages or merely in a new direction in their therapeutic work. I don’t usually meet the client and the information is fed back to them by the therapist as appropriate to the situation.

Do you teach Astrology?

I teach astrology in Ireland as well as in Hawaii and California, from introductory weekends to weeklong courses at all levels and seminars in specific topics of interest for practicing astrologers. I also teach internationally on behalf of the Centre for Psychological Astrology in London – director is Liz Greene. Whilst in Dublin I am based in Oscailt www.oscailt.com.

Why do you work as A Psychological Astrologer

Because it is my greatest passion in life.
