Osteopathy is a system of medicine based on the theory that disturbances in the musculoskeletal system affect other bodily parts, causing many disorders that can be corrected by body manipulation. Osteopaths also employ conventional medical, surgical, pharmacological, and therapeutic procedures. Dr. Andrew Taylor Still established Osteopathic medicine in 1874. It is the goal of this system to aid the body in healing itself. Although they utilize all of the recognized procedures and modern technologies for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, osteopathic physicians bring a hands-on approach to medicine. In fact, they view manipulation or palpation as an aid to diagnosis and treatment.
