Chiropractic is the practice of using the hands to facilitate the body's innate ability to heal itself. Chiropractors assess disorders of the nervous system, spine, and joints of the body. They provide a diagnosis, treatment and advice for prevention of these disorders. The primary goal of chiropractic body work, which comes in the form of the Chiropractic adjustment to the joints of the spine and extremities, direct work with the nervous system and soft tissue manipulation, is to treat areas of high tension in the nervous system which can cause decreased movement of the joints of the spine, and inflammation of the muscles, ligaments and soft tissue surrounding the area of nervous system tension. These areas of high tension often present with pain, dysfunction, and muscle spasm. In addition to working with the nervous system, Chiropractors are trained to prescribe therapeutic exercise, and other non-invasive therapies including dietary counselling.
